Project Description:
In the youth voices project, we were assigned different topics, mine being Immigration. In groups 4 - 6, we created different products for exhibition. I was a panelist so I had to create a opening statement that focused on my position paper. My position paper was about the process and challenges of entering the country legally. Other people had different roles though like moderator or pollster or statistician. Each of us did our part and then we presented what learned and our opinion on immigration to a bunch of 11th and 8th graders at a different High Tech High.
Project Learning Part 1:
From the start of this project, I knew about the basics of the election but not about the history of it. I had no idea what the electoral college was and how much of a huge roll it played in the election. The only thing I knew going into this was how someone votes and how a lot of Americans just do not vote. Especially with 2016 election, not a lot of people voted which I think affected it.
Project Learning Part 2:
When most people think about immigration they think about all the illegal ones coming in and say why do they not just come in legally? Honestly, at the beginning of this I thought that too. It wasn't until I really started researching that I realized how challenging it is for immigrants getting in legally. If they do, the struggle the face in here are still bad. My perspective has changed immensely on how I see the whole immigration problem. It's good to get actual facts and information instead of just believing what is showed on t.v.
Reflection:
I participated a lot in this project because it was something I was very interested in. If I didn't, I don't think it would have had that much of an impact and it would have been boring. But because I engaged myself, it helped me see different aspects of the political process and why someone might a certain law to be passed. The most significant part to me was the position paper, it was way to get down words and show my opinion with evidence. I also really liked the exhibition, it would have better to get students who were a little more respectful but overall I enjoyed it.
